Pretty Little Death

I believe I won’t have enough time to get my portfolio ready in January for my application to the Glasgow School of Art (or the curse of being poor with big dreams), but I keep working on it anyway, as a challenge. The aim of a portfolio is to show your artistic skills in different technics and to stand out of the crowd. As I kind of doubt having enough various skills (lack of time made me stick to my own style of painting) and any particular sense of originality, I know that I may have to wait another whole year before having a chance to get involved – although it depresses me very much to be stuck in a situation I hate for so long.

Anyway, one of my projects is called “Pretty Little Death” and involved lace and skulls, which force me to study a lot. I wasn’t used to focus this much on details, I even find it a bit painful sometimes, but I’m learning to not be frustrated. Out of proportions, ugly, my sketches are not what I would have considered satisfying before, but I’m actually having a lot of fun challenging myself with new technics (like charcoal) and new patterns.

Here’s where I am so far, I hope to have the final work ready at the end of the month!

Je pense que je n’aurais pas assez de temps pour finir mon portfolio pour l’école d’art de Glasgow d’ici janvier (c’est ça d’être pauvre et d’avoir des rêves un peu trop grands), mais je continue à y travailler quand même, comme un challenge. Le but d’un portfolio est de montrer ce dont vous êtes capable artistiquement parlant et votre habilité à utiliser différentes technique – et aussi prouver en quoi vous vous démarquer des autres. Comme je doute avoir suffisamment de différents talents (le manque de temps m’a en quelque sorte poussée à rester dans mon confortable style de peinture) ou même un sens particulier d’originalité – ce qui signifie que je devrais probablement attendre une année supplémentaire avant d’avoir une chance d’être sélectionnée, ce qui est plutôt déprimant étant donné que je stagne dans une situation plus qu’insatisfaisante depuis bientôt un an et demi.

L’un des projets que je compte inclure dans ce portfolio s’appelle “Pretty Little Death (Jolie Petite Mort)”, un ensemble de crânes et de dentelles, ce qui me force à beaucoup étudier via croquis. Je n’étais pas habituée à me concentrer autant sur des détails, c’est même plutôt douloureux parfois, mais j’apprends à ne plus me sentir frustrée. Non-proportionnels, moches, mes croquis ne font pas partie de ce que j’aurais qualifié de “satisfaisant” auparavant., mais je me fais plaisir à me confronter à de nouvelles techniques (comme le fusain) et de nouveaux motifs.

Voilà où j’en suis, j’espère finir ce projet à la fin du mois !
