The BofA Contemporary Arts Festival

I took part yesterday (01/11/14) in an art festival in the Scottish town (village?) of Bridge of Allan, next to Stirling. It’s the first time I show my work since I moved to Glasgow, and it’s also the first time that I take part in a festival rather than a collective exhibition. The good thing with a festival is that you see a lot of different types of works made by a lot of different people, which is very inspiring. Atmospheric photographs, prints, original framings, paintings and drawings: a lot of ideas came to me in this period of artistic research and intensive study. I was lucky enough to be introduced to a good printmaker and to have a chat with a gallery curator.

The exhibitors were dispatched into four spaces, the busiest being venue 1, a large clear space showing the most professional of us. I was in venue 2, a smaller but nice looking room where the gothic ceiling and windows have been preserved and where the dark wood on the walls contrasted nicely with my paintings. I showed five of them, pretty certain that I wouldn’t find any buyer but hoping to meet interesting people. Thanks to my significant other’s amazing people and selling skills (I am the most awkward person when it comes to talk about what I do), we had the opportunity to meet people genuinely interested in my work, asking questions and even twice asking about orders. Even if it doesn’t lead to anything, it was nice to have these chats and to share my work with all of those who stopped at my stand.

I am really considering applying again next year, especially as I am working on diverse ink and prints projects and would be able to show something different. Taking part in an art festival is a really interesting and exciting experience!

Hier (01/11/14), j’ai pris part à un festival d’art contemporain dans la petite ville écossaise de Bridge of Allan, à côté de Stirling. C’était la première fois que j’exposais mon travail depuis mon déménagement à Glasgow et c’était aussi la première fois que je participais à un festival plutôt qu’à une exposition collective. Le bon point d’un festival, c’est que vous voyez plein de différents genres d’approches artistiques par plein de gens complètement différents, ce qui constitue une bonne source d’inspirations nouvelles : photographies atmosphériques, lithographies, encadrements et montages originaux, peintures et dessins… Ce qui est particulièrement intéressant lorsque l’on est dans une intense période de recherche artistique et d’études. J’ai été assez chanceuse pour rencontrer un bon imprimeur et pour discuter avec une galeriste.

Les exposants étaient répartis dans quatre différents espaces, le plus grand et fréquenté étant la salle n°1, où se trouvaient notamment les professionnels locaux. Mon stand se trouvait dans la salle n°2, accolée à la première d’un côté et à une église de l’autre, dans laquelle le plafond et les fenêtres gothiques ont été conservées et où le bois sombre des murs contrastait agréablement avec mes peintures. J’ai exposé cinq d’entre elles pour cette fois-ci, certaine que je ne vendrais rien mais espérant rencontrer des gens intéressants (et intéressés par mon travail). Grâce aux talents de vendeur de mon petit ami (Je suis terriblement maladroite en société, et encore plus lorsqu’il s’agit de parler de ce que je fais), on a eu l’occasion de parler à tout un tas de personnes, amis de curateurs, d’artistes, ou juste appréciant mes tableaux, posant des questions et prenant ma carte – j’ai même eu deux demandes de commandes pour l’instant sans suite, mais qui sait ? Même si ça ne mène à rien pour cette fois, l’expérience valait le coup, ne serait-ce que parce qu’elle m’aide à me positionner face à mon propre travail.

Je pense participer encore l’année prochaine, d’autant plus que j’ai quelques projets à l’encre et autres impressions et lithos en tête. Participer à un festival d’art contemporain est définitivement intéressant et motivant !
